How to Help Kids Sleep on Road Trips and Long Flights
Sleep Is the Secret to Happy Kids
A tired child is a cranky child. A cranky child turns a family vacation into a stress marathon. The goal is not just to get from point A to point B. It is to arrive with a rested, happy kid who is ready to explore.
Start before you leave. Keep their sleep schedule as normal as possible in the days leading up to travel. A well-rested child adapts to new environments faster than an overtired one. Sleep begets sleep, even on vacation.
Create a Familiar Routine
Pack their favorite blanket, stuffed animal, and bedtime book. Familiar objects signal safety in unfamiliar places. Read the same story, sing the same song, do the same three things before bed that you do at home. Consistency is comfort.
Support Their Neck
Adult travel pillows are too big for small necks. Kids need support sized for them, or a rolled sweater tucked carefully around their neck and shoulders. The goal is to keep their head from falling forward, which wakes them up and frustrates everyone.
Snacks, Screens, and Timing
Avoid sugar before sleep, even if the airport bakery looks tempting. Limit screens an hour before you want them to doze off. Blue light tells their brain it is daytime. And if you can time your travel to overlap with their normal nap or bedtime, you have already won half the battle.
