Business Travel Recovery: Beating Jet Lag Starts Before You Board
Jet lag is the unspoken tax on business travel. A McKinsey-style trip, fly Sunday, present Monday, fly home Tuesday, can cost a senior leader two full days of cognitive performance. That is the difference between a deal and a missed deal. The travelers who do this every week have a protocol. Here is what works.
48 hours before: shift your schedule
If you are flying east (US to Europe), start going to bed one hour earlier each night for two nights. If you are flying west, push it one hour later. By the time you board, you have already absorbed two of the five-to-eight hours your body needs to adjust.
The night before: pre-hydrate, eat clean
Cabin pressure dehydrates faster than ground air. Show up to the airport with already-elevated hydration. Skip the heavy meal, your stomach will struggle at altitude.
In flight: the actual sleep protocol
This is where most people lose the battle. The trick is to treat the flight as a real sleep session, not a movie marathon.
- Set your watch to the destination time zone the moment you board.
- If it is night at destination, sleep. If it is day, stay awake, even if you are tired.
- Skip alcohol (it fragments sleep cycles) and caffeine after the first hour.
- Use a proper travel pillow, eye mask, and noise-canceling headphones. Skimping on any of these costs you sleep quality, which costs you tomorrow's meeting.
The arrival routine
The first 4 hours after landing are everything. They tell your circadian rhythm what time it is.
- Get sunlight, 20 minutes outdoors within an hour of landing, ideally before noon local time.
- Eat on local time, even if you are not hungry. Skip meals you "would have had" in your origin time zone.
- Do not nap longer than 20 minutes if you land in the morning.
- Light exercise, even a 20-minute walk, speeds adaptation.
The piece most people miss
None of this protocol works if you arrived sleep-deprived. The pre-flight prep and the post-flight routine only pay off if you actually slept on the plane. That is why business travelers obsess over their sleep setup, pillow, mask, headphones, more than they obsess over the seat class.
Our adjustable pillow was designed with this traveler in mind. See Nodless, it is the piece of gear that turns "I tried to sleep" into "I actually slept."
